Quarth

By G.B. World, March 16, 1990

A pretty solid port of Konami’s oddball shooter/puzzle arcade hybrid, which boasts some serious creative talent (seriously, it’s like the entire future Treasure team). Although this conversion loses the cooperative play feature, it’s otherwise quite faithful. Not a masterpiece, but an interesting novelty to be sure.

Here’s some bonus trivia. As far as I can tell this was the last GameBoy game scored by Norio Hanzawa before leaving for Treasure, the other one being The Castlevania Adventure. Quarth was also part of Konami GB Collection Vol. 2, inexplicably renamed to Block Game. While it was colorized, multiplayer was removed. Quarth would also show up on a Nintendo system again much later as a minigame in the Japan-only Ganbare Goemon game on the Nintendo DS.
